When Your Boss Has a Temper — and You Still Have to Stay Professional

I once worked for a manager with an explosive temper.
One minute we were discussing metrics, the next — yelling, a slammed door and silence.

At first, I took it personally. But over time, I realized something powerful:
👉 Their emotions weren’t about me. It was about a thing that didn’t happen or did happen
👉I couldn’t control them. My response was the only thing I could control.

That’s when I learned the real meaning of professionalism under pressure — staying calm, clear, and respectful even when others lose control.

Here’s what helped:

  • Breathe before you respond.   Do it slowly try the 4 square method
  • Don’t try to outshout them
  • Vent in private, not at work.
  • Journal or speak with a mentor or therapist
  • Communicate early — surprises trigger stress.
  • Protect your mental health (your peace matters)
  • Document when boundaries are crossed. Keep in mind that submitting it to HR is considered a write-up of your supervisor.
  • Lead by example, not by reaction.

Because at the end of the day…

  • 💡 Composure is strength.
  • 💡 Integrity is influence.
  • 💡 Emotional intelligence is leadership.
